Is Colposcopy a Painful Procedure?
Colposcopy is generally a painless procedure. However, some women may experience mild discomfort or pressure during the examination. When a special solution is applied to the cervix, a temporary burning or tingling sensation may occur. The level of discomfort depends on individual sensitivity and the extent of the procedure.
If a biopsy is needed during the procedure, there may be short-term pain, but this pain is usually mild and lasts only a few seconds.
What to Expect During Colposcopy?
Colposcopy typically takes 10-20 minutes and includes the following steps:
Positioning: You will be asked to lie down in a gynecological examination position.
Use of Speculum: A speculum is inserted to open the vaginal walls, which may cause mild pressure.
Cervical Examination: Using a specialized device called a colposcope, the cervix is examined in detail.
Application of Solution: Acetic acid and Lugol's solution are applied to the cervix to identify abnormal cells.
Biopsy (If Necessary): If abnormal cells are detected, a small tissue sample may be taken.
Before and After Colposcopy Care
Before Colposcopy:
Avoid sexual intercourse, vaginal douches, or tampon use for 24-48 hours prior to the procedure.
The procedure may be more comfortable if done when not menstruating.
After Colposcopy:
Light vaginal spotting or bleeding may occur; this is normal.
If a biopsy was performed, avoid heavy exercise and sexual activity for a few days.

Are There Any Risks or Side Effects of Colposcopy?
Colposcopy is generally a safe procedure with minimal serious side effects. Rarely, patients may experience:
Mild cramps
Vaginal discharge
Light bleeding
These symptoms typically resolve on their own within a few days. However, if you experience heavy bleeding, severe pain, or a fever, seek medical attention immediately.
When is Colposcopy Necessary?
Abnormal Smear Test Results: Colposcopy is used to investigate the cause of abnormal cellular changes.
Positive HPV Results: Especially when high-risk HPV types are present, colposcopy is recommended.
Bleeding Symptoms: Used as a diagnostic method for issues such as post-coital bleeding.
Cervical Lesions: Effective in evaluating visible cervical lesions.
